This question may come up in the interview in different forms. I have provided you with some sample answers, create your own answers based on them.
The hiring managers have no incentive to hire someone without an IT degree for an IT job. Why hire and waste their time from their busy schedule to teach you all the technologies and skills while they can easily hire one from thousands of desperate and eager CS freshers? They won’t, until and unless you stand out from the rest of the freshers from ALL fields!
Be awesome with your answers and attitude. It will show in the interview and get you noticed, and of course hired!
Note: Don’t use the answers as is. I have only given them to give you an idea to come up with your own that suits your story and situation. You are not a student anymore you have to come up with better solutions than to copy-paste everything.
Programming:
- Ever since I started working with a computer I was fascinated by it. It
is amazing to think you can create something out of nothing just by
writing few lines of code. I am really interested/excited to work in this
field even though I don’t have a CS degree. The best part is anyone
can learn programming with a computer, internet connection,
Stackoverflow/Google and patience! - When I worked in computer related labs during engineering I
discovered the joys of programming and decided to pursue a career in
programming. - Mobile apps and games industry is only going to go up as more and
more Indians and Chinese own smart phones. It is going to be
interesting to see how complex the apps and games get and I want to
be a part of it!
DB: - With storage becoming increasingly cheap and the obsession to save
everything on the hard drive, the big-data field has become one of the
exciting fields in IT industry and I want to be part of this exciting
development. - Big-data has become big and there are many cool things being done
with it, like predictive analysis (look up what it means, don’t be lazy!).
I would love to be a part of this and work in this field. - I enjoy writing SQL queries, it is gratifying to see queries work as you
make changes to them on-the-fly in the editor.
Network/System: - I like working with computers, finding shortcuts, improving the
performance etc. I was the go-to-guy in college/hostel/home. They
would come to me whenever there was a network problem in the
computer lab or a friend had trouble with his/her software or a
malware problem. I know at work it will be different and sometimes
challenging dealing with unhappy employees etc., but it is something
I will enjoy working with. - I enjoy working with different parts of an OS like group policies,
POP3 servers, IMAP, Active Directory in Windows Server. Also trying
out different OS like Ubuntu etc. In order to learn I routinely try out
different settings in our broadband router , in the beginning I had
even ruined the settings and had to call customer service!
DevOps: - DevOps seems to be a sweet spot for me. I can get to work with little
bit of programming and also work with cool technologies of server OS
and client OS. It can be the best of both the worlds
