Search Strategy #3 – LinkedIn Groups

LinkedIn Groups.

LinkedIn groups is another great way of getting in touch with your peers in your industry. There are many groups built around different professions and fields. You can join these and start asking questions on the personal projects you are working on. You can also take part in discussions already happening in the groups! This will help you in drawing attention and also get in touch with employed engineers who may be able to get you interviews or forward your resume to their friends in other companies.

Some groups are open to join and others require approval from the moderator/owner of the group. This is usually to keep the spammers out! Just join the group and one of the moderators will add you to the group typically within 24-48 hours.

Some groups are like ghost towns – hardly any activity. You can try posting questions and start a discussion. If you don’t get any replies don’t lose heart, just keep posting in as many active groups as you can find. I will show you how to find groups buzzing with activity.

Search Groups

Select ‘Groups’ from the search bar menu and type in your field of choice.

Join Groups

Look for groups that are labeled ‘Very Active’ and also check if the group has a good number of members. Refer the image above. Some of the groups could be created for professionals in a particular country. In that case you may have to add ‘India’ in the search bar along with your search term, e.g, ‘Mechanical Engineers India’. You can also experiment by adding city instead of the country.

Open a Group

Click on one of the groups. Click on the ‘i‘ next to the yellow ‘Join’ button, this will show you the meta data of the group. Refer the image below.

Group Statistics

Click on the ‘Group Statistics’ to get more details about the group. The ‘Summary’ and the ‘Activity’ tab should give you an idea on the activity of the group.

The ‘Comments Last Week’ can be a good indicator, 82 comments in a week is not bad. This group is a good target. It also has 24,842 members.
